SIGNS OF CHOCOLATE TOXICITY

Chocolate contains a xanthine compound,THEOBROMINE,that is toxic in dogs in sufficient quantities. It takes a fairly large amount of chocolate to cause problems. The toxic dose if THEOBROMINE is about 100 to 150MG/kg. The toxic dose for a 60lb dog is about 60oz of milk chocolate (38-1.5oz Hershey Bars) 18oz of semisweet chocolate (about 1 bag morsels) 6oz of baking chocolate (3-4 bars). The signs of toxicity in your pet include: Hyperactivity, Irritability, Restlessness, Increased Urination, Vomiting and Muscular Tremors and Tenseness. In severe cases, seizures or cardiac arrest can occur and death can result from severe intoxication.

There is no specific antidote for this poisoning.

Inducing vomiting can help if the ingestion is known and has occurred within 1-2 hours. With ingestion of milk chocolate, diarrhea is a common secondary problem occurring 12-24 hours after the chocolate, which may require veterinary care.

IF YOU SUSPECT CHOCOLATE POISONING, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO CONTACT YOUR VETERINARIAN!
